Der fliegende HolländerIngela Brimberg as Senta
Richard Wagner · First performed Dresden, 1843
Wagner's tale of a cursed sea captain and the young woman who sacrifices herself to redeem him.
The opera
Wagner's romantic opera tells the legend of the Flying Dutchman, a captain condemned to sail the seas for ever. Once every seven years he may go ashore, and he can be released only by the love of a woman who will be faithful to him until death.
Driven into harbour by a storm, he meets the Norwegian captain Daland, who offers him his daughter Senta in exchange for his treasure. Senta has long been fascinated by the Dutchman's legend and recognises him at once. When the Dutchman overhears the huntsman Erik pleading with her, he believes himself betrayed and sets sail again; Senta proves her faithfulness by throwing herself into the sea, and the curse is broken.
Ingela Brimberg as Senta
Senta has been one of Ingela Brimberg's central roles since 2013, when she sang it for the first time in Wagner's original 1841 version in concerts with Marc Minkowski, recorded for Naïve. She has since sung it in productions across Europe, two of which have been released on DVD and Blu-ray.
